Each small step we take keeps us moving; each well thought word improves our relationships and opportunities; each small action advances us towards our goals. The small steps in our lives are what keep us growing.
Sadly I think many of us stop noticing and celebrating the small steps in our lives. We become so captivated with some grand picture of the world or our lives that we are trying to achieve, that we lose sight of how the small daily activities in our lives move us forward.
Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval have written a great little book recently called, ‘The Power of Small.’ They outline the advantages of focusing on doing small manageable things, especially when we are feeling stuck or overwhelmed. They share some great anecdotes about how small has worked success in people’s lives. You can check out their website here: http://www.thepowerofsmallbook.com/
David Ramsey is a popular personal money management expert who has also helped hundreds of people by showing them how to gain control over their finances by taking small steps towards reducing debt and saving for the future. Many other people are also proponents of small steps. Dieticians and exercise consultants campaign the benefits of taking small steps to improve diet, exercise and wellbeing. Parents and teachers encourage children and students to learn in manageable steps. And of course children themselves are the masters of taking small steps towards greatness.
In my own work I notice that people often come looking for answers or solutions to significantly complex problems. If I can help them notice the small steps they are already taking while also encouraging and support them to continue taking other small steps, I notice that many opportunities open up before them.
It is to this end that I want to champion small steps, and other small things that can help us advance. I want to give small steps the credit they deserve for they are truly the activities by which we continue to perform our daily lives successfully.
